A woman died of vomiting and diarrhoea after consuming contaminated water in Kariganur area of Hospet town in the district. The deceased has been identified as Seethamma (66), a resident of RBSSN Camp in Kariganur. She was seriously ill and was admitted to VIMS, Ballari.

The number of people hospitalised due to vomiting and diarrhoea due to consumption of contaminated water rose to 27. Meanwhile, MLA HR Gaviyappa and Deputy Commissioner MS Diwakar visited the spot and reprimanded the officials. He then visited the shikari camp and took information from the authorities. Municipal Corporation AEE Satish and other officials were reprimanded on the spot as it was found that clean drinking water was not being supplied on the spot.

People have started coming to the hospital suddenly due to vomiting and diarrhoea. When the water supplied to the village was checked, it came to light that contaminated water was being supplied. A pipeline was laid to supply water from tungabhadra reservoir to Kariganur village 20 years ago. The authorities have not paid attention to where there is a lapse in the pipeline. Water is being supplied to the village through tankers as cases of vomiting and diarrhoea are on the rise in the village. The clean drinking water supply pipeline should be repaired immediately.

The villagers have been instructed to provide free drinking water from the pure drinking water unit. In the case, contaminated water was supplied to Kariganur and Shikari camps. Deputy Commissioner MS Diwakar said that if the incident took place due to contaminated water supply, we will issue show cause notices to the officials who were negligent. District health officer Dr Shankar Nayak said precautionary measures have been taken.
