India, having recently achieved the world’s fastest 5G rollout, is emerging as a key player in the global telecom sector’s pursuit of 6G or sixth-generation communication technology. While still in the conceptual stage, 6G is generating excitement with its potential for unified human-machine and machine-machine connectivity, offering a glimpse into the future of communication. Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) Area Office & Innovation Centre in March 2023, unveiling the Bharat 6G Vision Document and launching the 6G R&D Test Bed in India. The Bharat 6G Vision aims for India to be a leading contributor to the design, development, and deployment of 6G technology by 2030. India has actively participated in formulating the ITU’s 6G Vision Framework, collaborating with member countries of the United Nations. The Department of Telecommunications’ efforts in prioritizing 6G standardization have positioned India as a key player in international telecommunications. ITU has designated the 6th Generation Technology as ‘IMT 2030,’ and its 6G Framework recommendation, approved on June 22, 2023, will serve as a foundational document for global 6G research and development. India’s emphasis on Ubiquitous Connectivity, Ubiquitous Intelligence, and Sustainability has enhanced its standing in the international telecommunications space. The Bharat 6G Vision, centered on principles of affordability, sustainability, and ubiquity, aims to position India as a leading supplier of advanced and affordable telecom technologies on the global stage. India’s swift engagement in 6G discussions, just six months after the 5G rollout, reflects its commitment to staying at the forefront of technological advancements.
