Woman prisoners pour out grievances; team says extending necessary facilities and ensuring safety of women prisoners must be top priority
Bengaluru: Following allegations of irregularities, members of the National Commission for Women (NCW) visited Parappana Agrahara Jail and conducted an inspection.
Commission chairperson Vijaya Rahatkar, member secretary Sudeep Jain, members Delina Khongdup, Mamata Kumar, Dr Archana Majumdar and other officials visited the jail and checked the attendance book and other documents.
Later, they went to the women’s barracks and interacted with the convicts and undertrial prisoners for about two hours. When some of the women prisoners brought the issues to the notice of the team, the latter explained them about the helps being extended by the Commission.
After that, Vijaya and her team held a meeting with the jail chief and collected information on facilities being extended to the women prisoners. Later, the Commission chief reportedly warned that no trouble should be caused to women prisoners. She directed the jail authorities to review the women prosoners’ complaints without delay and ensure relief in a sensitive manner.
Later, he held a meeting with Director General of Police MA Salim and senior officers at the state police headquarters. During this, the Commission expressed its appreciation over the programmes organised by the Police Department, such as OneStop OneSakhi, Safety Island, Command Centre, Door-to-Door Policing, and the programmes undertaken to ensure safety of women and children.
NCW members Delina Kandu, Mamata Kumari, Archana Mujenda, State Women’s Commission chairperson Dr Nagalakshmi Chaudhary, Bengaluru City Police Commissioner Seemant Kumar Singh, and Women and Child Welfare Department Principal Secretary Shamla Iqbal were present.
