Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi has said that Tehran is ready for a fair and balanced negotiation with Washington, provided the talks are based on mutual respect and aimed at safeguarding Iran’s national interests.
In a televised interview with the state-run IRIB TV, Araghchi elaborated on Iran’s stance regarding the resumption of nuclear discussions with the United States and the possible removal of sanctions. He emphasized that if Washington proposed a credible plan that protected Iran’s core interests, Tehran would give it serious consideration.
Our position towards the United States has always been clear, Araghchi said. If they are ready to negotiate on an equal footing to safeguard common interests, on the basis of mutual respect … we will also be ready for such negotiations.
Reiterating Iran’s consistent policy, the minister stated that the country’s nuclear issue would be the only subject on the table in talks with the West. He reaffirmed that Iran would not compromise on its right to enrich uranium domestically, insisting that all enriched uranium would be used solely for peaceful purposes.
Regarding discussions with European powers France, Britain, and Germany collectively known as the E3 Araghchi said there were currently no grounds for negotiation.
The 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) saw Iran agree to limit its nuclear program in exchange for sanctions relief. However, the United States’ withdrawal from the accord in 2018 and subsequent reinstatement of sanctions led Tehran to scale back some of its commitments.
Araghchi’s remarks indicate a cautious but clear signal that Iran may be open to reviving dialogue, should the U.S. demonstrate willingness for equitable engagement.
