South Eastern Coalfields Ltd (SECL), a subsidiary of Coal India, has achieved the milestone of dispatching 100 million tonnes of coal for the fiscal year 2023-24, marking a 17.65 percent increase compared to the same period in the previous year. This accomplishment represents the quickest dispatch of 100 million tonnes of coal by the Chhattisgarh-based company since its inception. Of the total coal dispatched, more than 80 percent was supplied to the power sector, with approximately 81 million tonnes of coal sent to power plants across India. Notably, SECL’s mega projects in Gevra, Dipka, and Kusmunda, located in Korba district, made significant contributions to the total coal dispatch. Gevra, the largest coal mine in the country, contributed 30.3 million tonnes, while Dipka and Kusmunda contributed 19.1 million tonnes and 25.1 million tonnes of coal, respectively. Together, these three mega projects accounted for more than 74 percent of the total dispatch. Additionally, SECL’s Korea Rewa coalfield, which houses many old and underground mines, saw a notable increase in coal dispatch, up by 20 percent compared to the previous year. SECL is one of the largest coal-producing subsidiaries of Coal India, and it achieved a record coal production of 167 million tonnes in the previous fiscal year, accounting for approximately one-fourth of CIL’s total coal production for that year. This fiscal year, the company has set a target of 197 million tonnes of coal production.
