In the wake of recent fire accidents in Bengaluru, Director General of Police Fire and Emergency Services, Mr. Kamal, has taken the initiative to bolster fire safety measures in the city. In an exclusive interview he shed light on the steps taken to prevent future disasters and improve safety standards. When asked about his perspective on fire safety measures post the Koramangala fire disaster, Mr. Kamal recounted the tragic incident that occurred in Koramangala, where a fire erupted due to the leakage and explosion of one of over a dozen stored commercial cylinders. This incident prompted a reevaluation of the city’s fire safety standards for high-rise buildings. Previously, all buildings with a height of 15 meters and above were required to obtain permission. However, this has been raised to 21 meters, encompassing more structures. The DGP emphasized that restaurants, particularly rooftop ones, must now obtain permission from the Greater Bangalore Municipal Corporation. n a city with a burgeoning number of multi-storied buildings, the task of monitoring compliance with these regulations is undeniably challenging. Each department responsible for safety standards has its own set of restrictions and limitations. Nonetheless, ensuring the safety of life and property remains paramount. Any shortcomings discovered during inspections will result in stringent actions against the defaulting entities. Mr. Kamal clarified that storing LPG cylinders necessitates permission and licenses from various organizations and departments. Incidents like the one in Koramangala trigger comprehensive reviews and evaluations to prevent their recurrence. Mr. Kamal also highlighted the importance of shared responsibility, emphasizing that individuals need to remain vigilant regarding fire safety. Even buildings falling below the 21-meter height threshold are encouraged to adopt fire safety measures.
