Must read

The State Government’s recent restriction on Freedom Park for protests has raised concerns among educational institutions and government offices in the vicinity. The commotion and traffic congestion caused by ongoing protests near Pratinitiya Pratibha Park are causing distress to students, teachers, and local authorities. The situation has prompted a formal verbal complaint to be lodged with the police. L. Gomati Devi, Vice-Chancellor of Maharani Cluster University, expressed her dissatisfaction, stating that these protests bring no benefits but rather disrupt the daily routines of educational institutions. Ushadevi C, Principal of Home Science College, pointed out several grievances arising from the protests. Demonstrators have been reported using college facilities without authorization, parking private vehicles in college-owned areas, and littering the surroundings. Despite multiple complaints, these issues persist, with some individuals resorting to unsanitary practices like urinating on college walls due to the lack of basic facilities. The disturbances created by the protests extend beyond cleanliness concerns. These disruptions interfere with the teaching environment, making it challenging for students and teachers to concentrate. Traffic congestion on the roads near the college adds to the frustration experienced during the start of the academic day. In response to these concerns, Higher Education Minister Sudhakar suggested the possibility of building a high wall to mitigate the disturbances. He also mentioned plans to hold discussions with the Commissioner of Police to address the issue, emphasizing that it is the government’s responsibility to find a balanced solution. rotestors, however, argue that their right to protest is fundamental and should not be curtailed. Activist Vimala K.S proposed designating alternative spaces such as City Hall, Mysore Bank Circle, Silver Jubilee Park, and Cubbon Park for smaller protests, where they can effectively draw attention to their causes. Women’s rights activist Brenda Adige emphasized the importance of not suppressing the voices of protestors, advocating for a more nuanced approach that respects both the right to protest and the needs of the surrounding community.
