Special Police Teams Established To Combat False Social Media Information

Must read

To tackle the escalating issue of false and inflammatory content on social media platforms, City Police Commissioner B. Dayanand has announced the formation of a comprehensive three-tiered special team. Comprising experts ranging from the police station level to the commissioner’s office, these units will be tasked with closely monitoring and addressing the dissemination of inaccurate and provocative news online. Expressing concern over the escalating law and order problems triggered by misleading social media posts, Commissioner Dayanand highlighted the imperative need to counteract this trend. The proliferation of objectionable and false information, he stressed, not only induces public anxiety but also poses a serious threat to public order. With the purpose of curbing the spread of misinformation, three distinct teams have been assembled. Each police station will be represented by a duo of technically adept personnel, forming the initial tier of the response. This station-level team will undertake the critical task of identifying and flagging fabricated news, inflammatory content, and oppositional narratives on social media platforms. Building upon this groundwork, a secondary team will operate at the Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) level, while a more extensive team will be situated at the commissioner’s office. These teams will operate collaboratively, ensuring prompt and effective action against viral misinformation. Fact-checking will be a primary focus, bolstering authenticity in an era of rampant fake news. Commissioner Dayanand underscored the training already provided to the designated staff for the purpose of fake news detection. The teams will function as an interconnected network, with station-level teams reporting to DCP-level counterparts, and information ultimately relayed to a specialized unit within the Commissioner’s office. To enhance their capabilities, the social media monitoring unit within the commissioner’s office will comprise skilled cyber experts and state-of-the-art equipment.
