Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar on Thursday congratulated leaders of pro-Kannada organisations for withdrawing the bandh called in the interest of the people of Karnataka.
Speaking to reporters at Vidhana Soudha, Shivakumar said the decision to call off the bandh was welcome and appreciated the organisations for considering the interests of the people. He assured that demands raised by the groups on behalf of farmers and the people of Karnataka would be examined by the government.
Shivakumar said representatives of the pro-Kannada organisations had met him earlier in the day and submitted a memorandum containing several demands. He said he had assured them that their representation would be considered and appropriate action taken after examining the issues raised.
The Chief Minister said withdrawing the bandh was a responsible decision, particularly considering its possible impact on the public, businesses and daily activities across the state.
He also appealed to the media to play a responsible role in informing citizens. Shivakumar said news organisations should ensure that information reaching the public is truthful, impartial and fair.
The bandh call had been announced by pro-Kannada organisations over demands concerning farmers and other state-related issues. The groups later withdrew the proposed shutdown following discussions with the government.
