Shivamogga City MLA S.N. Channabasappa has warned of strict action against officials and contractors if negligence continues in the maintenance of streetlights within the city corporation limits.
Chairing an urgent review meeting at his official office “Karthavya Bhavana,” the MLA held discussions with officials from Mangaluru Electricity Supply Company Limited and the municipal electricity wing regarding the functioning and upkeep of streetlights across Shivamogga city.
He expressed strong dissatisfaction over repeated complaints from residents about non-functional streetlights in several localities. Channabasappa said the lack of timely repairs has created safety concerns, especially for women, elderly citizens and commuters during nighttime hours.
The MLA stated that public safety is directly affected when streetlights remain defunct, and directed officials to ensure that all lights are restored and kept operational without delay. He stressed that any negligence or delay in addressing complaints would not be tolerated.
He further instructed officials to take strict disciplinary action against contractors responsible for maintenance work who have failed to perform their duties as per contractual terms. He ordered that formal notices be issued immediately to such contractors for their failure to maintain public infrastructure.
Channabasappa emphasized that repeated lapses in streetlight maintenance reflect administrative irresponsibility and urged officials to adopt a more accountable and proactive approach. He said public grievances must be addressed on priority to ensure smooth functioning of civic services.
Officials present at the meeting, including assistant executive engineers and municipal electrical department staff, assured that corrective measures would be taken promptly to improve streetlight maintenance across all wards in the city.
The meeting concluded with a directive to establish stricter monitoring mechanisms to prevent further lapses and ensure uninterrupted public lighting for safety and convenience.
