Stop politicizing icon Zubeen Garg: CM

GUWAHATI

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma criticized opposition parties for trying to use the legacy of late iconic singer Zubeen Garg for political gains.

Speaking to reporters at “Zubeen Khetra,” the memorial site near Guwahati where the artist’s last rites were performed, Sarma stated that these actions have deeply hurt public sentiments.

The Chief Minister explained that he personally oversaw the final arrangements at the site. However, he expressed disappointment that certain politicians introduced toxic debates, making the sacred location uncomfortable to visit during the state elections.

Sarma emphasized that a true artist belongs to everyone and must always remain above political affiliations. He expressed relief that the election dust has settled, allowing people to refocus on celebrating Garg’s rich music, unique character, and immense cultural contributions.

Sarma launched a direct attack on the Congress party, claiming they tried to appropriate the singer by placing his pictures at polling stations. He asserted that this strategy backfired completely because the public strongly disliked seeing a beloved cultural icon dragged into political warfare. He further alleged that the opposition members who claimed friendship during the elections were actually the ones who heavily criticized the singer during his lifetime.

Reaffirming his party’s stand, Sarma stated that the BJP deliberately chose not to use the singer’s name for votes. He promised that the state government is fully committed to developing the memorial ground into a fitting tribute to Assam’s eternal heartthrob.
