GE Aerospace expands India footprint with Rs 100 cr Pune unit

INTRO: In 3 years, the aerospace major’s investments in the facility, which makes critical components for commercial aircraft engines, total ₹510 crore

New Delhi

US-based aerospace engine manufacturer GE Aerospace announced on Monday that it will invest Rs 100 crore in its manufacturing facility in Pune to expand production capabilities and upgrade infrastructure.
According to the company, the latest investment will be used to introduce new welding technologies, advanced inspection systems, precision tools, gauges and fixtures at the Pune facility.

Additional infrastructure upgrades are also planned to help increase production capacity and improve manufacturing efficiency as the company continues scaling up operations in the country.

With the fresh investment, GE Aerospace’s total commitment to the Pune facility has now crossed Rs 510 crore over the past three years. The company stated that Rs 410 crore of that amount had already been invested during the last two years as part of its long-term expansion strategy in India.

The Pune manufacturing plant plays a critical role in GE Aerospace’s global supply chain and produces essential components used in several major commercial aircraft engine programmes. These include the GE90, GEnx and GE9X engine series, as well as LEAP engines manufactured by CFM International, a joint venture between GE Aerospace and Safran.

Company officials said the investment reflects GE Aerospace’s broader strategy of strengthening India’s aerospace manufacturing ecosystem while also supporting workforce development. Since 2015, the Pune facility has trained more than 5,000 production associates, contributing to the development of skilled talent in the aviation manufacturing sector.

The company added that the continued expansion of operations is expected to create additional apprenticeship programmes and employment opportunities, not only within GE Aerospace but also across its supplier network and partner industries.

The Pune facility currently works with more than 300 local suppliers and forms part of a much larger network of over 2,200 GE Aerospace suppliers operating across India. The company said this supplier ecosystem has become increasingly important in supporting both domestic manufacturing and global export operations.

GE Aerospace also highlighted its longstanding relationship with India’s aviation and defence sectors. The company’s defence engines and systems power several aircraft platforms operated by the Indian Air Force and the Indian Navy. In the commercial aviation sector, more than 1,400 GE and CFM engines are currently used in aircraft operated by Indian airlines.

The latest investment announcement comes as India continues to position itself as a major global manufacturing and aerospace hub. Industry experts believe that increased foreign investment in high-technology manufacturing sectors such as aerospace could help strengthen India’s industrial capabilities, generate skilled employment and support the country’s long-term aviation growth plans.
