Varthur resident wins Rs 11,000 after broadband service failure

BENGALURU

A resident of Varthur has been awarded compensation of Rs 11,000 after a consumer forum held a wireless broadband service provider responsible for failing to provide reliable internet connectivity. The ruling is being seen as an important reminder of consumer rights in cases involving poor telecom and internet services.

According to the complaint, the resident had subscribed to a wireless broadband connection but continued to face repeated issues related to internet quality, weak signals and service disruptions. Despite paying the required charges, the complainant allegedly did not receive stable and uninterrupted internet connectivity as promised by the service provider.

Frustrated over the recurring problems and the lack of effective resolution, the consumer approached the forum seeking relief. After reviewing the case, the forum observed that the company had failed to fulfil its service obligations and had not ensured proper connectivity for the customer.

The forum termed the issue a clear case of “deficiency in service” and directed the broadband provider to pay Rs 11,000 as compensation to the complainant. Officials noted that customers paying for internet services are entitled to receive the promised level of quality and consistency.

The ruling assumes significance at a time when dependable internet connectivity has become essential for work, education, banking and daily communication, particularly in fast-growing urban localities such as Bengaluru. Frequent complaints related to weak broadband signals and poor customer support have become common across several residential areas.

Consumer rights activists said the judgment sends a strong message to internet service providers that negligence in service delivery cannot be ignored. The case is also expected to encourage more users facing similar problems to seek legal remedies instead of tolerating prolonged service failures.
