Meghalaya bets big on tourism ecosystem

SHILLONG

Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma announced that Meghalaya is on its way to becoming a world-class travel destination. Speaking at a special event near Orchid Lake, he emphasized that the state’s success depends on everyone working together – from local artisans and students to community leaders – to build a welcoming environment for visitors.

The Chief Minister shared exciting news regarding travel infrastructure, revealing that the expansion of the Shillong Airport runway has been officially approved. The project is expected to be finished within fifteen months, allowing larger planes to land directly in the hills. “This will be a game changer,” Sangma noted, as it will make the state much more accessible to international and domestic travelers.

Beyond flights, the government is investing in several “iconic” projects to draw crowds. These include the Shillong Ropeway, a skywalk at Mawkdok, and a unique Rain Museum in Mawsynram. These attractions are designed to highlight the state’s natural beauty while providing modern comforts and safety for families.

Tourism Minister Timothy D. Shira added that the sector is now a backbone of the local economy. In 2025, nearly 18 lakh tourists visited the state, and over 150 new projects are currently under development. During the ceremony, the government distributed scholarships to hospitality students and provided financial support to locals opening homestays. By empowering residents to become “tourism champions,” Meghalaya hopes to ensure that every visitor leaves with a great story to tell.
