Bengaluru police have registered an FIR against actor Chetan Ahimsa following a controversy over his remarks on the memorial of Kannada icon Dr Rajkumar, intensifying a dispute that has drawn strong reactions from the film fraternity and fans.
The case comes after producer Sara Govindu filed a complaint against the actor at the Seshadripuram police station. Earlier, Chetan himself had lodged a complaint against Govindu, leading to an FIR. With both parties now approaching the police, cross-complaints have been registered, and an investigation is underway.
Police officials said they have collected video evidence and social media material related to the incident. Based on the findings, notices will be issued to the concerned individuals, and their statements will be recorded as part of the probe.
The controversy erupted after Chetan posted comments on April 24, marking Dr Rajkumar’s birth anniversary, questioning the allocation of around 2.5 acres of land for the actor’s memorial. In his post, Chetan argued that land is a scarce resource and should be used for broader public benefit rather than political or symbolic purposes.
The remarks triggered widespread outrage among fans of the late superstar, with several prominent personalities, including Sara Govindu, Film Chamber president Jayamala, and veteran actor Sundar Raj, criticising Chetan’s comments.
Tensions escalated as groups of fans protested outside Chetan’s residence, and a separate complaint was also filed at the Basaveshwaranagar police station by fan organisations.
In the wake of the backlash, Chetan issued a public apology, stating that he did not intend to hurt sentiments. “If my statement has caused pain to anyone, I sincerely regret it. I am also a fan of Dr Rajkumar,” he said.
Police said further action will be based on evidence gathered during the ongoing investigation.
