New Mangalore Port gets massive hi-tech upgrade

NEW DELHI

The central government has officially greenlit a major makeover for the New Mangalore Port, aiming to turn it into a world-class maritime hub.

The project focuses on redeveloping “Berth Number 9,” a nearly 50-year-old structure that will now be transformed to handle massive shipments of oil, gas, and petroleum. With an investment of ₹438.29 crore, this upgrade is a key part of India’s plan to modernize its busy coastline.

This isn’t just a simple repair; it is a total reconstruction. The old, aging facilities will be torn down and replaced with modern infrastructure built to last another half-century. One of the most exciting changes is the deepening of the waters. By increasing the depth from 10.5 meters to 14 meters—and eventually even deeper—the port will be able to welcome giant ships known as Very Large Gas Carriers. These massive vessels can carry huge amounts of fuel, making trade much cheaper and more efficient.

Minister Sarbananda Sonowal praised the move, noting that it prepares India for future energy needs. The project will be managed through a partnership between the government and private companies, ensuring expert handling for the next 30 years. Once finished in about two years, the port will be able to move nearly 11 million tonnes of cargo annually. This boost in capacity will not only lower moving costs for businesses but also strengthen India’s position as a global leader in the shipping world.
