More than three-quarters of fans in the Premier League do not support the continued use of Video Assistant Referees (VAR), according to a survey conducted by the Football Supporters’ Association.
The survey, carried out between February 26 and March 23, gathered responses from nearly 8,000 supporters of top-flight clubs. It found that 75.7% of respondents opposed VAR, while a striking 91.7% said the technology had diminished the spontaneous joy of celebrating goals.
FSA Premier League network manager Thomas Concannon said the findings reinforced long-standing concerns among fans. He noted that similar sentiments were expressed in a previous survey conducted in 2021, indicating persistent dissatisfaction with VAR’s role in the game.
“These findings show that many supporters feel disconnected from the matchday experience due to VAR interruptions,” Concannon said, adding that the results have been shared with league officials and refereeing authorities for further discussion.
Despite the criticism, the Premier League has defended the system, highlighting its role in improving decision-making accuracy. According to the league, VAR contributes to around 100 correct overturns each season, ensuring that goals, penalties, and red card decisions are judged more fairly.
The league also emphasised that it applies a relatively high threshold for VAR intervention compared to other competitions, allowing referees’ on-field decisions to take precedence. This approach, it said, makes VAR less intrusive than in tournaments like the UEFA Champions League, where interventions are more frequent.
Authorities have acknowledged, however, that refinement is necessary. The league and refereeing body have committed to ongoing dialogue with fans to improve the system’s implementation while maintaining fairness.
Interestingly, separate Premier League research suggests that while many fans are frustrated with VAR’s execution, a significant number still support its continued use if improvements are made.
The debate highlights a growing tension between technological accuracy and the emotional essence of football, with fans calling for a balance that preserves both fairness and the spirit of the game.
