Steps launched to stop sewage flowing into Cauvery River

Deputy Commissioner Dr. Kumar has instructed officials to take immediate and effective measures to stop sewage water from entering the Cauvery River near the historic Wellesley Bridge in Srirangapatna. The direction comes after the Upalokayukta, upon observing sewage flow into the river, filed a suo motu complaint.

Speaking at a meeting held at the DC office to address the issue, Dr. Kumar said a dedicated committee will be formed to oversee the construction of a barrier to prevent wastewater from flowing directly into the river. Currently, sewage from the northern part of Srirangapatna travels from Rampal Road, joins the Chikkahole water channel, and eventually reaches the river near Wellesley Bridge.

To tackle this, a retaining wall will be built near the Wellesley Bridge water gate to block contaminated water. Additionally, another barrier will be constructed near the Ganapati Temple at Biddakote. A new wet well will be developed at a suitable location, from which polluted water will be pumped to the existing wet well near the temple. From there, it will be transported to the STP plant for scientific treatment.

Dr. Kumar noted that although one barrier has already been completed near the bridge, the second could not be built earlier due to flooding. With water levels now receding, the pending work will be finished soon to ensure no sewage enters the Cauvery.

The meeting was attended by Tahsildar Chetan Yadav, engineers from the Urban Development Cell and PWD, ZP officials, and other department representatives.
