In a strong political statement, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) president and actor Vijay has launched a sharp attack on both the Election Commission (EC) and the ruling DMK government, alleging that the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Tamil Nadu is unconstitutional, politically motivated, and a serious threat to democracy.
Boycotting the all-party meeting convened by the DMK on Sunday to discuss the SIR process, Vijay said the exercise could lead to mass voter deletions, drawing parallels to the large-scale removal of minority voters reported in Bihar during a similar revision. He questioned the EC’s decision to complete verification of over 6.36 crore voters in just 30 days, calling it an impractical and non-transparent move that undermines democratic rights.
Accusing the DMK of stage-managing the meeting to divert attention from corruption scandals, Vijay said that if the ruling party truly opposed the SIR, it should have passed a resolution against it in the Assembly, as done by Kerala. He described the meeting as a deceptive political theatre meant to mislead the public.
Vijay also proposed seven key recommendations to ensure a fair voter roll revision — including deleting fake entries, adding all eligible voters, accepting Aadhaar as proof of identity, and ensuring the final rolls are digitally accessible to citizens and political parties. He further urged the EC to involve local representatives and independent observers to prevent manipulation.
Reaffirming his commitment to democratic values, Vijay announced that the TVK would launch statewide awareness campaigns to monitor voter verification camps and safeguard citizens’ rights. TVK stands firmly with the people — for democracy, for rights, and for justice, he declared.
Vijay’s criticism aligns with growing opposition from several Tamil Nadu parties who fear that the SIR process could be exploited ahead of the Assembly elections.
