Vice President CP Radhakrishnan on Sunday described libraries as temples of learning, emphasising their role in nurturing critical thinking, promoting authentic knowledge, and empowering individuals and communities.

Addressing the International Conference on ‘Libraries Empowering Communities, Global Perspectives’ through a video message, the Vice President said that in an era dominated by digital content and rapid information flow, libraries continue to serve as vital knowledge hubs. They not only provide access to credible information but also foster a culture of deep learning and meaningful dialogue, he said.

The conference, organised by the PN Panicker Foundation at Kanakakkunnu Palace, marked the 80th year of Kerala’s organised library movement an initiative inspired by Panicker, revered as the pioneer of India’s library and literacy revolution.

Commending the Foundation’s contributions, Radhakrishnan lauded its efforts in promoting reading habits, digital literacy, and community empowerment. He highlighted its enduring motto Vayichu Valaruka (Read and Grow) as a guiding light for social progress and inclusivity.

Reflecting on India’s civilizational ethos, the Vice President drew parallels between the nation’s ancient traditions of learning and its modern institutions of knowledge. He recalled how spiritual leaders like Adi Shankaracharya travelled across India to spread awareness, unify diverse thoughts, and promote enlightenment, a legacy that continues through the library movement.

Radhakrishnan also praised Kerala’s outstanding achievements in literacy and education, noting that the state remains a model for the nation. Paying rich tributes to P. N. Panicker, he said his vision transformed libraries into vibrant community centres that continue to inspire generations to embrace reading, knowledge, and lifelong learning.
