A shocking incident in central Delhi’s Ram Nagar area left a 22-year-old pregnant woman dead after she was stabbed in public by her lover, while her husband killed the attacker in retaliation, police said on Sunday.
The deceased, Shalini, a homemaker and mother of two daughters, was attacked by 34-year-old Aashu alias Shailendra, a local criminal who allegedly had an affair with her. Her husband, Akash, 23, an e-rickshaw driver, sustained multiple stab injuries and is currently hospitalized in critical condition.
According to DCP Central Delhi, Nidhin Vansal, the incident occurred late Saturday night as Shalini and Akash were on their way to meet her mother. Aashu attacked Akash first, but he avoided the blow. Aashu then stabbed Shalini multiple times while she was sitting in an e-rickshaw.
Akash fought back to save his wife, resulting in a violent struggle during which he overpowered Aashu, seized his knife, and stabbed him to death. Both Shalini and Aashu were declared dead upon arrival at the hospital, while Akash was admitted with serious injuries. Shalini’s brother, Rohit, had rushed them to the hospital.
Police said Shalini and Akash’s marriage had previously faced issues, during which Shalini had an affair with Aashu. The couple later reconciled, enraging Aashu, who claimed Shalini’s unborn child was his. Shalini insisted the child belonged to her husband, which may have triggered the fatal attack.
A case of murder and attempted murder has been registered, and the bodies have been sent for post-mortem. Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident.
