India bears special responsibility as role model for Global South: Jaishankar

India has consistently advocated shaping a global AI agenda via G20 Presidency

 New Delhi

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar highlighted India’s strong commitment to global Artificial Intelligence (AI) governance, emphasizing its role in promoting sustainable development and inclusive AI.

Speaking at the inaugural session of the Trust and Safety India Festival 2025, he said India has consistently advocated shaping a global AI agenda, demonstrated during its G20 Presidency. He noted India’s efforts in advancing AI responsibly, safeguarding trust, safety, fairness, and accountability, and cited initiatives such as the New Delhi Declarations, AI Summits in Bletchley Park and Seoul, and co-chairing the Paris AI-Action Summit.

Jaishankar acknowledged challenges surrounding AI, including bias, ethics, privacy, and vulnerability, and stressed the importance of global dialogue to address them. He emphasized that multi-stakeholder collaboration is essential for meaningful progress, noting the significance of events like the TASI Festival in promoting inclusive, people-focused AI governance.

He also highlighted India’s upcoming AI-Impact Summit, scheduled for February 19-20, 2026, in New Delhi. Announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the summit aims to translate international AI discussions into measurable impact, focusing on human development, environmental sustainability, and equitable global progress. Objectives include democratizing AI access, supporting innovation tailored to diverse local contexts, embedding environmental priorities into AI models, and promoting safe, trusted, and human-centric systems. The summit also seeks to amplify the Global South’s voice, ensuring technological benefits are shared broadly rather than concentrated in a few regions.

Sharing his remarks on X, Jaishankar wrote: “Pleased to address the inaugural session of Trust and Safety India Festival 2025. Highlighted the transformative impact of AI and India’s efforts in fostering AI governance based on trust, safety, fairness, and accountability.”

‘Needed responsible AI through indigenous tools’

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar emphasized India’s key role in global AI, noting that many nations, especially in the Global South, look up to it for guidance. Speaking at the Trust and Safety India Festival 2025, he highlighted India’s achievements in digital infrastructure and governance, stressing the need for responsible AI through indigenous tools, guidelines, and self-assessment protocols. He said AI will transform economies, work, health, and education, making balanced governance essential to protect citizens, echoing PM Modi’s view that technology is a force for good only when guided by humanity.
