Zoho founder clarifies taxes, data hosting

Zoho reinforces self-hosted infrastructure, domestic data centers, and global expansion plans.

CHENNAI

Zoho co-founder Sridhar Vembu has moved to counter widespread misinformation about the company, reaffirming its commitment to India in terms of product development, taxation, and data security.

In a detailed social media post, Vembu emphasized that all Zoho products are developed in India and that the company pays taxes on its global income in the country. Headquartered in Chennai, Zoho operates in more than 80 countries, including a strong presence in the United States, but continues to identify itself as a homegrown technology enterprise.

Addressing concerns over data privacy, Vembu confirmed that Indian user data is hosted domestically, with data centers in Mumbai, Delhi, and Chennai, and expansion plans for Odisha. Globally, Zoho operates more than 18 data centers, ensuring that user data remains within each country’s jurisdiction. “We are committed to hosting each country’s data in their own jurisdiction,” he stated.

Vembu also highlighted Zoho’s reliance on self-owned infrastructure, explaining that the company runs all services on its own hardware and in-house software frameworks, built on open-source platforms such as Linux and Postgres. He clarified that Zoho does not depend on major cloud providers like AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud. Even Zoho’s messaging platform, Arattai, is fully self-hosted, with only limited external support for speed optimization, without storing data outside Zoho servers. Union Minister Piyush Goyal praised the company’s swadeshi vision, while Vembu reiterated Zoho’s philosophy of being “Made in India, Made for the World.” On Tuesday, he also met Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman as part of the government’s push to support indigenous products.
