UGC Issues Notice to 54 Private Universities

New Delhi

The University Grants Commission (UGC) has issued notices to 54 private universities across India for failing to comply with mandatory disclosure requirements under Section 13 of the UGC Act, 1956. These institutions did not upload essential information about courses, research, faculty, student strength, infrastructure, finances, and other academic activities on their websites, despite repeated reminders. The UGC emphasized that such data must be publicly accessible without log-ins or registration to ensure transparency for students, parents, and stakeholders.

The non-compliant universities span several states, including Gujarat, Haryana, Assam, Punjab, Rajasthan, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Goa, Jharkhand, Karnataka, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, West Bengal, Maharashtra, Manipur, Sikkim, Tripura, and Madhya Pradesh. UGC Secretary Professor Manish Joshi has directed these institutions to immediately submit the required details to both their websites and the Commission. He stressed that students and parents must have complete, authentic information to make informed decisions regarding higher education.

While some universities have begun updating their portals, others have assured compliance soon. The UGC clarified that merely uploading information online is insufficient; submission to the Commission is also mandatory for monitoring. The initiative aims to enhance accountability, transparency, and trust in higher education institutions. The full list of non-compliant universities has been published on the UGC’s official website.
