Congress seeks swift legal action after a Kerala BJP spokesperson threatens Rahul Gandhi on live TV.
New Delhi
The Congress on Monday condemned a chilling death threat issued against Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi by Kerala BJP spokesperson Printu Mahadev. In a letter to Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Congress general secretary KC Venugopal demanded “immediate and exemplary” legal action, calling the remark a “cold, calculated and chilling” threat.
During a televised debate on a news channel, Mahadev declared in Malayalam that “a bullet will fall on Rahul Gandhi’s chest” if he pursued his political mission. Venugopal, who shared the clip, warned that such statements go beyond political disagreements and amount to criminal intimidation.
The Congress questioned whether the threat was part of a “larger, sinister conspiracy” and accused the BJP of fostering a toxic climate of hate. “This is no off-the-cuff remark or hyperbole,” the party said in a statement on X.
The letter to Shah also cited previous online threats to Gandhi, recalling the assassinations of Indira and Rajiv Gandhi as grim reminders of the dangers of political violence. The party cautioned that failure to act swiftly would be seen as complicity and a “de facto licence” for violence.
Venugopal stressed that political disputes must be resolved within the constitutional framework, not through intimidation. Congress urged the home minister to ensure decisive action to protect democratic values and the safety of opposition leaders.
