Social Security to Be Extended to All Unorganised Workers in Karnataka

Karnataka plans to provide social security and labor cards to all 1.8 crore unorganised workers, including drivers, online platform workers, and domestic helpers.

Labour Minister Santosh Lad announced that the state has 1.8 crore unorganised workers, all of whom will receive social security through improved infrastructure. Speaking at a media conference in Hirekerur, he said the government has directly visited all districts, engaging with urban residents and employee organizations to address their concerns and facilitate new project initiatives.

He stated that 13 lakh applications have been received under various schemes, including 6 lakh for service facilities and 7 lakh for scholarships. Each application will be thoroughly scrutinized before providing benefits.

The five major government guarantee schemes have not impacted departmental finances. The government is partnering with the Transport Board to issue labor cards and social security benefits to 35 lakh private vehicle drivers and operators with commercial licenses. Workers on online platforms, including Flipkart, Amazon, and domestic helpers, will also receive labor cards and social security coverage.

Assembly Deputy Speaker Rudrappa Lamani and Hirekerur MLA UB Banakar attended the press conference. According to the Labour Department, 45 lakh workers in the state hold labor cards, including 39 lakh newly issued in the past year. In Haveri district, 2.93 lakh workers have cards. To combat the 60–70 percent of fake cards in circulation, Minister Lad announced the launch of a new app to ensure authenticity.
