Cyber fraud attempt targeted Sudha Murthy

A case has been registered at the Bengaluru Cyber Crime Police Station after Infosys Foundation chairperson and Rajya Sabha member Sudha Murthy was targeted in an attempted cyber fraud.

According to the complaint, Sudha Murthy received a call from an individual claiming to be an employee of the Ministry of Telecommunications. The caller alleged that her mobile number was not linked to Aadhaar and further accused her number of being misused to circulate pornographic videos. The fraudster then attempted to extract personal details under the guise of verification.

Murthy, however, became suspicious of the claims. To verify, she checked the caller ID using Truecaller, where the number appeared as “Telecom Department.” Recognizing the possibility of a scam, she refrained from sharing any information and promptly reported the matter to the Cyber Crime Police. Officials have taken up the case and initiated an investigation into the attempted fraud. Authorities noted that cybercriminals often use spoofing techniques to make fraudulent calls appear legitimate, tricking victims into disclosing sensitive data.

Cyber Police have once again urged the public not to share personal or financial details over phone calls, emails, or messages, regardless of claims made by the caller. They emphasized that government departments never seek such information over unofficial communication channels. The incident underscores the growing sophistication of cyber frauds targeting prominent individuals and highlights the need for heightened awareness among all citizens.
