Tribute paid to IPD Salappa legacy

The Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA) observed the memorial programme of IPD Salappa, revered as the patriarch of pourakarmikas, at its office premises. The solemn event paid homage to his pioneering contributions in the field of civic labour and waste management.

The ceremony was led by Karigowda, Chief Operating Officer of the Bengaluru Solid Waste Management Limited, who garlanded the statue of IPD Salappa and offered floral tributes. Speaking at the occasion, officials highlighted Salappa’s lifelong dedication to the welfare and dignity of pourakarmikas, crediting him as an inspiration for generations of civic workers.

The event drew the participation of senior civic leaders including Dr. Rajendra K.V., Commissioner of BBMP West, Deputy Commissioners Amaresh and Lakshmi Devi, along with Ramamani, COO of Bengaluru Solid Waste Management. Officials, staff, and a large number of pourakarmikas were also present, underscoring the respect and admiration that Salappa continues to command even today.

In their messages, dignitaries emphasised the importance of remembering pioneers like Salappa, who played a crucial role in shaping Bengaluru’s civic framework. They noted that his struggles and leadership laid the foundation for modern-day waste management practices, and his vision continues to guide efforts in ensuring dignity and welfare for pourakarmikas. The memorial event concluded with a collective pledge to uphold Salappa’s values of hard work, social responsibility, and community service, reaffirming the city’s commitment to those who form the backbone of Bengaluru’s civic system.
