Emphasizing the timeless ideals of equality and social harmony, District Commissioner P.N. Ravindra urged citizens to rise above caste and religious divisions. Speaking at the “Brahmashree Narayana Guru Jayanti” event held on Monday at the Deputy Commissioner’s office auditorium, organized jointly by the District Administration, Zilla Panchayat, and the Department of Kannada and Culture, he highlighted the importance of embracing the principles of “One caste, one faith” and “We are all equal.”

Paying floral tributes to a portrait of Narayana Guru, the District Commissioner recalled how the social reformer emerged in Kerala during a period of intense caste discrimination. Devoting his life to reducing social inequality, Narayana Guru established platforms for unity, justice, and education. “The messages of Narayana Guru remain relevant for today’s and future generations,” Ravindra said, adding that society must follow the path of equality and justice promoted by the Guru.

Guest speaker Anil G. detailed the Guru’s fight against oppressive practices in Kerala, such as prohibiting lower-caste women from covering their chests or accessing temples. In response, Narayana Guru established “Shivagiri,” ensuring temple entry for all and challenging social injustices.

Senior community leaders were felicitated during the event. Other dignitaries in attendance included Additional District Commissioner Dr. N. Bhaskar, Zilla Panchayat Chief Accounts Officer Raghu, Assistant Director of Kannada and Culture D.M. Ravi Kumar, and local community leaders Devraj, R. Lakshminarayana, Devendra Swamy, and Govindappa. The ceremony reinforced the enduring relevance of Narayana Guru’s teachings, calling for a society grounded in social justice, equality, and peaceful coexistence.
