India’s Electronics Boom
New Delhi
India’s electronics manufacturing sector has witnessed unprecedented growth over the past 11 years, with production expanding six-fold to become an industry worth ₹11.5 lakh crore, Union Electronics and IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said on Saturday.
Addressing a press conference at the BJP headquarters on the recent GST overhaul, Vaishnaw highlighted that exports of electronic products have risen eight times during the same period. The industry, he said, now provides direct and indirect employment to more than 25 lakh people.
In the last 11 years, electronics manufacturing has emerged as a very big sector in India. Production has increased six times, exports eight times, and the industry has grown to ₹11.5 lakh crore, creating jobs for 25 lakh people, he stated.
The minister underlined that India is now manufacturing every component required for electronic products domestically. If we talk about a mobile phone, every part — glass, cover, chip, printed circuit board (PCB) or camera module — is being produced in the country, he said.
Vaishnaw pointed to the recent inauguration of a factory at Sohna, Haryana, where smartphone batteries will be manufactured. The country requires about 50 crore batteries annually, and a single unit will cater to 20 crore of these, he added.
Urging citizens to support India’s self-reliance drive, the minister said, It is time for a self-reliant India, where everyone is adopting ‘Swadeshi’ with great enthusiasm. I request all of you to increase the use of India-made products in your life.
He also linked the growth story with GST reforms, noting that consumers will benefit from reduced prices on essential electronic items such as televisions, refrigerators, dishwashers, microwaves, and power banks. The surge in production and exports underscores India’s rise as a global hub for electronics manufacturing and its drive toward economic self-reliance.
