In just one year since its inauguration on Independence Day 2024, the Mother and Child Hospital at the Raichur Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) has successfully conducted 1,203 safe deliveries, emerging as a major healthcare facility for women and newborns in the district.
Hospital officials said 681 normal deliveries and 522 caesarean sections were performed over the past year. The hospital also handled 225 complicated cases, including first-time pregnancies, mothers with high blood pressure, women below 145 cm in height, twin pregnancies, and first deliveries after more than five years of marriage. “Our advanced delivery room, skilled doctors and modern technology have helped us achieve this milestone,” said District Health Officer (DHO) Dr Surendra Babu.
Strategically located near slum areas such as LBS Nagar, Kalidas Nagar, Jalal Nagar, Ashraya Colony and Siya Talab Layout, the hospital has become a critical healthcare hub for minority communities, Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes. It is currently staffed with four obstetricians, three paediatricians and radiologist Dr Prajwal Kumar, who also serves as administrative medical officer, alongside postgraduate students and specialists from Navodaya Medical College.
District Reproductive and Child Health Officer Dr Nandita MN credited the success to regular health check-ups under the Pradhan Mantri Suraksha Matrutva Abhiyan. “Women with high-risk conditions receive specialised counselling on delivery planning, child development, iron intake and nutrition. Three paediatricians are on hand to treat post-delivery complications and neonatal issues. So far, 465 children have been treated in the inpatient department,” she said.
DHO Dr Surendra Babu revealed that plans are under way to set up a district early intervention centre to identify and treat developmental disabilities in children.
