Women’s Commission always ready to protect girls, Dr Nagalakshmi Chaudhary

The Karnataka State Commission for Women is always ready to protect girls and safeguard the rights of women, said Commission Chairperson Dr Nagalakshmi Chaudhary.

She was addressing a women’s gathering held at Hallur Function Hall in Nalatwad, near Narayanpur in Hunusagi taluk, after attending a naming ceremony. Dr Chaudhary urged mothers to provide quality education to their daughters and encourage them to pursue higher positions in life. Education does not belong to anyone exclusively, she said.

Recalling her own journey, she said that she had reached her present position through education. She advised women to visit government offices themselves to avail themselves of their rights and services. If anyone harasses girls, women should stand united and fight against such incidents.

During the programme, Dalit youth leader Manju Kattimani submitted a memorandum to Dr Nagalakshmi Chaudhary, urging the Commission to put pressure on the government to ensure stringent punishment for those accused in the alleged rape-and-murder case of Ashwini of Hokarani village in Raichur district and the murder of a woman at Karadakal village in Lingasugur taluk. He also sought appropriate compensation for the families of the victims.

Dr Nagalakshmi Chaudhary was welcomed with an aarati by officials of the Women and Child Development Department, ASHA workers and Anganwadi workers.

Leaders from various communities, officials and women participated in the programme.
