568 volunteers clear 173.66 tonnes of waste in single day

Eight garbage-vulnerable points (GVPs) across Mysuru were transformed into clean and aesthetically pleasing spaces on Thursday as part of the “Independence Day Cleanliness Campaign–2026: 80 Waste-Free Sites” initiative launched by the Mysuru City Corporation (MCC).
The cleanliness drive covered GVPs at Sandipani in Zone 1; 18th Cross Road in J.P. Nagar in Zone 2; near Sayyaji Mosque and on Nazarbad Main Road in Zone 6; near the Ganapati Temple at Natanahalli in Zone 7; opposite Sumana School and near RGA School at Kalyanagiri in Zone 9; and the Eden Garden area of Rajiv Nagar 2nd Stage in Zone 8.
As many as 568 people, including MCC officials and staff, representatives of various organisations and local residents, participated in the drive. A total of 173.66 metric tonnes of waste was removed during 39 man-hours of cleaning operations.
The transformation went beyond simply removing garbage. The cleaned locations were given a fresh look through painting, beautification works, plantation and public awareness activities, turning neglected dumping spots into cleaner and more attractive neighbourhood spaces.
Speaking at the programme held at Eden Garden, MCC Commissioner Savitha M.K. stressed the need for sustained vigilance to prevent the transformed sites from becoming garbage dumping grounds again. She urged local residents and organisations to work closely with the civic body to preserve the cleanliness and beauty of the revamped spaces.
Sanitation Ambassador Sooraj appealed to citizens not to dump waste indiscriminately and to segregate waste at source before handing it over to MCC collection vehicles. Such responsible practices, he said, would help in building a cleaner Mysuru.
With Thursday’s exercise, 40 GVPs have now been transformed under the campaign. The MCC has set a target of converting the remaining 40 sites within the stipulated period.
The civic body said the transformed locations would be kept under continuous monitoring for 30 days to prevent fresh dumping. It also warned that those found illegally dumping waste in public places would face penalties as per the rules. MCC officials, engineers, health inspectors, pourakarmikas, representatives of voluntary organisations and local residents participated in the campaign.
