Seasonal rains boost vegetation

The Kunchavaram Wildlife Sanctuary in the region has witnessed a remarkable revival, turning lush green after the onset of seasonal changes, offering a refreshing contrast to the surrounding arid landscape.
The sanctuary, often described as an ecological oasis, has seen trees that shed leaves during the peak summer months sprouting fresh foliage, transforming the forest into a vibrant green cover. The renewed vegetation has significantly enhanced the natural beauty of the area, attracting wildlife enthusiasts and visitors.
Officials noted that the previous extended monsoon season helped improve soil moisture levels, which continues to support vegetation growth even during the current year’s relatively lower rainfall period. Occasional rains in March and April, including brief showers and hailstorms, have further contributed to the regeneration of the forest ecosystem.
Mallikarjun Guthedar explained that wild animals in the sanctuary typically avoid consuming warm or stagnant water and prefer cooler sources, which helps maintain their health during hot conditions.
Water availability inside the sanctuary has also improved, with several streams and rivulets continuing to flow without drying up completely. However, in low-lying areas, stagnant water tends to heat up quickly under intense sunlight, prompting animals to move toward flowing water sources during the day.
Sanjeevkumar Chavan said that forest officials have made arrangements to maintain water supply by filling cement concrete ponds constructed within the sanctuary. Additional water will be provided as needed, particularly if rainfall remains inconsistent in the coming weeks.
The revival of the sanctuary is being seen as a positive sign for biodiversity conservation, ensuring habitat stability for wildlife amid rising summer temperatures.
