Stormwater Safety Push

With the monsoon season approaching, Bengaluru South City Corporation has issued strict directions for immediate cleaning of stormwater drains to prevent flooding and related disasters. Commissioner K N Ramesh personally inspected desilting work near Sindhoora Kalyana Mantapa on the Outer Ring Road at Sarakki in J P Nagar.
During the inspection, the Commissioner instructed engineers to remove all silt and waste from drains and stormwater channels without delay. He also ordered the removal of slabs covering roadside drains so that cleaning can be carried out effectively. Officials were told to ensure that garbage and weeds inside the drains are completely cleared.
He further directed that plastic waste collected at bridge junctions in Rajakaluves must be removed regularly, warning that such blockages can seriously affect water flow during heavy rains. He emphasized that continuous cleaning in sensitive locations is necessary to avoid flooding in residential areas.
At the same time, the Disaster Management team led by Additional Commissioner (Development) Dr Naveen Kumar Raju carried out inspections across Bommanahalli Zone. The team visited several flood-prone locations including HSR Layout 1st Main Road, 14th Cross, Madiwala Lake, Oxford College surroundings, and Anugraha Layout.
Officials reviewed the condition of stormwater drains, water flow levels, and encroachments in canal areas. The Additional Commissioner instructed departments to speed up desilting work and take preventive steps to handle possible rain-related emergencies.
Disaster Management Advisor Dr Vinutha and field engineers were also present during the inspection.
Officials said the ongoing works are aimed at reducing waterlogging problems and ensuring better safety for residents during heavy rainfall in Bengaluru city this monsoon season.
