Authorities strengthen monsoon crisis measures

Mangaluru

With monsoon approaching, Mangaluru district administration has intensified preparations to minimise damage from heavy rainfall and related emergencies. Authorities have introduced a decentralised response system, appointing incident commanders for every gram panchayat and urban ward to ensure quicker action during crises. Each gram panchayat has been allocated Rs 30,000 for urgent needs such as landslides, flooding of homes, or fallen trees.

A dedicated control room is being established at the deputy commissioner’s office, staffed round the clock with personnel from key departments, including National Highways and Fire and Emergency Services. Preventive measures include permission from the forest department to remove dangerous tree branches and ongoing desilting of major drains.

Rescue equipment has been readied, while Home Guards will patrol major beaches to restrict public entry during rough conditions. SDRF and NDRF teams will be deployed in landslide and flood-prone areas. Authorities have also ordered repairs of unsafe school buildings and removal of hazardous trees in school and anganwadi premises.

Measures are underway to clear debris from vented dams for smooth water flow. MESCOM has been directed to set up helplines and prevent power disruptions. Residents in vulnerable hill, slope, and coastal erosion zones have been advised to relocate to relief centres if necessary. Notices have been issued, warning that those ignoring evacuation advice may be held responsible for any consequences.

The administration emphasised coordination among departments and community participation to strengthen preparedness. Regular monitoring and quick communication channels are expected to improve response time and reduce risks during the upcoming monsoon season across the district effectively and safely overall.
