CHITRADURGA
Planning and Statistics Minister D. Sudhakar said work on the Bhadra Upper River Project, seen as a lifeline for Chitradurga district, is moving fast. He said water is expected to be released on a trial basis up to Gonur by February or March this year. Speaking after hoisting the national flag at the 77th Republic Day celebration at Government Science College grounds, he added that the government has promised Rs 200 crore to finish pending works. A major drip irrigation project covering 73,946 hectares in Hiriyur, Chitradurga, Holalkere and Challakere taluks is also ready to begin.
He praised farmers, saying the district ranked first in the state by producing 48,682 tonnes of cereals in 2025-26. Through horticulture and minor irrigation schemes, thousands of farmers received facilities worth crores of rupees, he said.
Sudhakar noted that an industrial corridor near Metikurki in Hiriyur taluk will create jobs for local youth. Land has been handed over for the Davangere–Tumakuru direct railway line, and he expressed confidence that trains will run by December 2027. He said the Constitution guarantees equal opportunities even for the poorest and recalled the role of late leader S. Nijalingappa. Government guarantee schemes, he added, have improved daily life for many families.
During the event, the Minister distributed peak caps to police personnel, sports kits to schools, vehicle keys to beneficiaries and cash prizes to top SSLC students. Several officers and staff were honoured for dedicated service. A colourful parade by police, NCC, Scouts and school children, along with patriotic cultural performances, marked the celebrations. Citizens attended in large numbers, sharing pride, hope and unity on the national festival.
