The BBMP election prospects are likely to be decided on May 20. The Supreme Court should hold an election within the stipulated time period, without any prejudice to the postponement of local bodies elections in the Madhya Pradesh case. The notification to hold elections to the local bodies within two weeks has been issued.
It was estimated that the BBMP, which had not held an election for the last one and a half years, could issue a notification within two weeks. However, some have argued that the Supreme Court’s ruling in the Madhya Pradesh case does not apply to the BBMP election as the Supreme Court has blocked the BBMP election.
The verdict in the Madhya Pradesh case was expected to apply to the BBMP only if the Supreme Court cleared the order forbidding the BBMP election.
Abhay S Oka and Khanvilkar came before a BBMP election petition on the 25th. However, Abhay S Oka, who was the Chief Justice of the Karnataka High Court, had given the BBMP a mandate to hold elections within three months.
This ruling by Oka was challenged by the state government in the Supreme Court, which prevented the election. Oka had withdrawn from the BBMP election petition hearing as the same petition hearing has now come to our seat.
