The global pharmaceutical industry is facing a significant shortage of talent with specific digital skills, a challenge that is slowing down its digital transformation efforts, according to a report on Sunday.
The report, highlights that large and medium-sized pharmaceutical companies are particularly concerned about the lack of specialized skills compared to smaller companies. As technological advancements accelerate, traditional training programs have struggled to keep pace, creating a growing skills gap that threatens the ability of companies to effectively adopt new digital systems.
Urte Jakimaviciute, Senior Director at GlobalData, pointed out that the shortage of talent with digital expertise has been a persistent issue, especially since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. She noted that while there is increasing demand for tech-savvy professionals, the supply of qualified individuals remains limited, and there is no quick fix for this issue.
Larger pharmaceutical companies, with their broader operations and more extensive digitalization needs, are facing particular difficulties in securing the talent required to fully leverage the technologies they invest in. This talent gap can lead to delays and hinder companies’ digital transformation initiatives.
On the other hand, smaller companies are often more focused on rapid innovation and tend to outsource specialized skills, which can help address some of the talent constraints. However, the fast-paced nature of technological advancements means that skills can quickly become outdated, underscoring the need for ongoing investment in talent acquisition and upskilling within the industry.
