Canada Post has announced a nationwide shutdown of its operations due to a national strike, which will cause delays for millions of Canadians and businesses. Mail and parcels will not be processed or delivered during the strike, and some post offices will close. Canada Post confirmed that service guarantees for items already in transit will be affected, and no new mail will be accepted until the strike is resolved.
Once the strike ends, Canada Post pledged to deliver mail and parcels as quickly as possible, prioritizing those already in the system. However, they cautioned that delays could continue even after the strike concludes, as it may take time for operations to fully normalize across the country.
The strike, initiated by 55,000 postal workers from the Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW), began at midnight on Friday after prolonged negotiations with little progress. The CUPW emphasized that the strike was a last resort, with workers demanding fair wages, safer working conditions, retirement benefits, and expanded services at public post offices. The union criticized Canada Post for refusing to negotiate a solution, despite having opportunities to prevent the strike.
