A grassfire erupted next to a runway at Sydney Airport following a reported engine explosion on a Qantas flight on Friday afternoon. The fire, triggered by an explosion on Qantas flight QF520, occurred shortly after the plane took off from the airport en route to Brisbane.
Fire and rescue teams rushed to the scene to extinguish the blaze near the third runway, the busiest at Sydney Airport. The Boeing 737-800 circled the area before returning to the airport and safely landing about 10 minutes later, at around 1:10 p.m. local time.
The flight, which had 174 passengers on board, experienced the engine issue shortly after takeoff. Passengers reported hearing a loud bang, and one passenger, Georgina Lewis, explained that the pilot later informed them of a problem with the right-hand engine. Despite the alarming incident, no serious injuries were reported.
