New Delhi

The government-owned power giant NTPC announced on Friday that it has successfully converted captured CO2 into methanol at its Vindhyachal plant. This groundbreaking project involves synthesizing CO2 captured from flue gas and combining it with hydrogen produced by a PEM electrolyser, marking a significant milestone in carbon management and sustainable fuel production.

NTPC Chairman Gurdeep Singh celebrated the event at the company’s 50th Raising Day, highlighting that both the CO2 capture and CO2-to-methanol plants are the first of their kind globally. This achievement underscores NTPC’s commitment to environmental sustainability.

Along with its latest innovation, NTPC has been advancing other green technologies, including Gen-4 ethanol, green urea, and sustainable aviation fuel. The company has also made significant progress in hydrogen production, carbon capture, and developed India’s first indigenous catalyst for methanol synthesis.

As part of its 50th anniversary celebrations, NTPC virtually launched hydrogen-fueled buses in Leh, marking another major step toward clean technology. The new buses represent a commitment to reducing carbon emissions.

The event also featured the unveiling of NTPC’s new 50-year logo, symbolizing the company’s legacy and future goals. The occasion saw the launch of new IT applications and the release of a comic book on NTPC’s Girl Empowerment Mission, which has positively impacted over 10,000 girls from rural communities.

Reflecting on the company’s journey, Gurdeep Singh honored the vision of NTPC’s founders and emphasized the company’s focus on renewable energy, including nuclear, as part of its mission to ensure a sustainable future.
