Approximately 25.6 million people, or 22% of the population in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), are facing severe food insecurity, according to the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). Those most affected are displaced individuals and returnees, especially in North Kivu, Ituri, South Kivu, Tanganyika, and Maindombe provinces. The FAO projects similar levels of food insecurity for the first half of 2025, citing ongoing violence and resource competition as major disruptors to agriculture and livelihoods. Additionally, about 7 million people remain internally displaced due to conflict and natural disasters, per the UN International Organization for Migration.
