Jagajit Singh Dalaiwala, national farmer leader of Samyukta Kisan Bede Morcha (Non-Politicians) organization, expressed confidence in the support of farmers nationwide and stated that their ongoing protest against the MSP Guarantee Act has continued for over 125 days at four locations. He emphasized the protest’s persistence until the central government fulfills their demands.
Dalaiwala highlighted that the BJP government faced a loss of 71 Lok Sabha seats in the recent elections due to farmer discontent. He warned that unless the BJP-led NDA government changes its anti-farmer policies, it will face further backlash from farmers in upcoming assembly elections, including those in Haryana and Maharashtra. On July 8, SKM (Non-Political) and Kisan Mazdoor Morcha plan to issue a memorandum detailing their 12 demands to all MPs except BJP’s 240 MPs. A large farmers’ convention is scheduled in Delhi in July to bolster the ongoing protest.
Meanwhile, Kurubur Shanthakumar, Samyukta Kisan Morcha South India Convenor and State President of the Federation of State Farmers’ Organizations, criticized the central government for not raising the minimum support price adequately, citing examples from Odisha and Chhattisgarh where state governments offered higher incentives than the central MSP. He denounced the Karnataka government’s inadequate relief to drought-affected farmers compared to Telangana’s loan waivers and incentives. Shanthakumar also criticized delays in releasing funds for milk producers in Karnataka.
Furthermore, farmer leaders from Haryana, Kerala, and Tamil Nadu voiced concerns over government policies affecting farmers, including reduced import taxes on cooking oils impacting coconut farmers and unresolved issues concerning sugarcane and coconut farmers in southern states.
