In Doddaballapura, local residents are voicing strong opposition to the municipal corporation’s plan to construct a public toilet next to an ancient Kalyani (traditional water tank). The Kalyani, located in front of the city court and revived by community efforts, holds historical significance dating back over 100 years. It has long served as a vital water source and cultural landmark for residents of Rojipura and Vinayakanagar.
The community had advocated for the construction of a park adjacent to the Kalyani, a proposal initially supported by the Doddaballapur Municipal Corporation. However, to the dismay of locals, the municipal corporation announced its decision to proceed with building a public toilet at the site instead.
Expressing their discontent, farmer leader and local resident Sulochana highlighted the ecological sensitivity of the Kalyani in the context of climate change. “There are only three Kalyanis in Doddaballapur city, and it is crucial to preserve them as water resources,” Sulochana stated. Concerns were raised that constructing a toilet nearby could lead to sewage leakage, potentially compromising the Kalyani’s pristine environment.
Residents clarified that their opposition is specific to the proposed location and reiterated support for constructing toilets in more suitable areas.
