Mangalore University has made a significant decision to start classes at government degree colleges, which are affiliated with it, early in the morning due to the rising temperatures in Dakshina Kannada district.

The Joint Director of the Dakshina Kannada College Education Department stated that the implementation of this decision is at the discretion of the principals of the respective colleges.

Concerned parents recently approached the Deputy Commissioner (DC) and urged for either declaring holidays or commencing classes early in the morning to safeguard students from heat-related health issues. Acting on this, the DC instructed the Deputy Director of the College Education department to address the matter. A video conference was then conducted by the college education department with principals of all degree colleges to discuss the issue. Subsequently, the Principals were directed to make the final decision on starting classes early in the morning.

Prof Jayakar Bhandary, Principal of Car Street Government College, commented, we have received instructions to begin classes early in the morning. Typically, classes in our college start at 9:30 am. However, some students commute from Kerala, beginning their journey at 6 am. Therefore, starting classes before 9:30 am poses challenges.

A similar decision-making process will be undertaken by the administrative boards of affiliated colleges of Mangalore University and autonomous colleges.
