BBMP Plans Advanced Aeration Systems For Bengaluru Lakes

Must read

Up to 20 lakes across Bengaluru are slated to receive advanced aeration systems in an effort to enhance water quality. The Lake Department of Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has selected water bodies from various zones for the installation of submerged diffused aeration systems, aimed at oxygenating the lower depths of the water columns.

The initiative under the Green Bengaluru project seeks to prevent fish kills, curb algae growth, and expedite the decomposition of organic matter.

A senior Lake Department official mentioned that selected lakes from all BBMP zones, chosen for their water quality and infrastructure, will be included in the initiative. These lakes have no sewage entry, sufficient diversion drains, and enhanced security measures. An action plan has been prepared and awaits commissioner approval for implementation.

Pending approval, BBMP plans to invite tenders for the installation of new aerators, each costing Rs 20 lakh, with a total project budget of Rs 35 crores. Officials anticipate that these advanced aerators will hinder algae growth by fostering a non-stagnant environment and ensuring continuous vertical mixing of water, thereby increasing dissolved oxygen levels even at the lake bottoms.

The official explained that two types of aeration systems are under consideration: cascading aerators for smaller lakes, drawing water from below and pushing it upward to mix with oxygen, and submerged systems for larger water bodies, oxygenating at deeper levels. Aerator quantity per lake will vary based on size and water quality.

City lake experts urge BBMP to prioritize maintenance of existing infrastructure and coordinate efforts with sewage waste departments to prevent nutrient inflow, rather than solely investing in new initiatives like floating wetlands with Canna Indica plants.
