For the first time, the newly settled Bru voters in Tripura cast their votes in the Lok Sabha General Elections on Friday. Previously, they had voted in the state assembly elections held in March 2023. The Bru migrants, who had been living in six relief camps in North Tripura district, are now permanently settled in 12 locations across the state.

Starting early in the morning, Bru community voters turned out in large numbers at polling stations. At the Goenang Para station in the Tirthamukh area of Gomati district, hundreds of Bru voters cast their ballots.

After voting, a Bru community member said, “We’ve never voted in Tripura’s parliamentary elections before. It’s great to be part of this democratic process.” This specific polling station had 609 registered voters.

In Tripura’s remote Dhalai district, residents used boats to reach polling stations and vote. The Election Commission of India shared photos on its official X (formerly Twitter) account, showing voters arriving by boat. Tripura led in voter turnout, recording 54.47% by 1 pm on Friday, according to the Election Commission of India. The second phase of the Lok Sabha elections began at 7 am, spanning 88 parliamentary constituencies across 12 States and Union Territories. Tripura’s Chief Electoral Officer reported that there are 17,524 eligible Bru voters. Of these, 16,300 are registered in East Tripura, with the rest having voted in the first phase on April 19.
