New Delhi
The Delhi Police informed the High Court that it has created a detailed standard operating procedure (SOP) to ensure the safety of students, especially female attendees, during college events and festivals in the Delhi-NCR region. This led the court to close its suo moto Public Interest Litigation (PIL) regarding a security incident at a college fest.
The High Court initiated the PIL after a report detailed a security breach at Delhi University’s Bharati College, where a staff member from IIT Delhi secretly filmed women in a washroom during a college fest. The court asked Delhi University, IIT Delhi, and Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University (GGSIPU) to explain their security protocols for college events and ensure student safety.
Representatives from the universities assured the court that they would adhere to the new SOP and follow additional police guidelines to improve safety. Given these assurances, the court closed the PIL, emphasizing that future changes to the SOP would require approval from all parties involved.
