Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese is set to embark on a diplomatic mission to China from November 4 to 7, aiming to restore stability in the strained relationship with Australia’s chief trade partner. The announcement follows a recent breakthrough in resolving trade disputes, including the ongoing issues regarding wine tariffs and Australian duties on Chinese wind towers.

Both sides, as confirmed by China’s Commerce Ministry, have reached a consensus to settle the WTO wine dispute, and progress has been made on the matter of wind towers as well. The move marks a significant step towards rebuilding the economic and diplomatic ties that have been strained over the past years due to various contentious issues.

Albanese emphasized the importance of stabilizing the relationship with China and highlighted the upcoming discussions with President Xi and Premier Li, which will encompass areas such as economic cooperation, climate change, and enhancing people-to-people connections.

Regarding the breakthrough on the wine dispute, Albanese expressed optimism, stating that a review of China’s position on wine tariffs will be conducted over the coming months, potentially leading to the resumption of Australian wine exports to China without the burdensome tariffs.

While the announcement marks a significant progress, the issue of duties on wind towers remains under consideration, as the decision on lifting anti-dumping measures on Chinese wind towers is yet to be finalized. China’s Commerce Ministry expressed its willingness to continue engaging in dialogue and consultations, highlighting the significance of the stable and healthy development of bilateral economic and trade relations. The recent developments signify a positive turn in the diplomatic relations, building on the diplomatic thaw that has seen China ease restrictions on various Australian imports in recent times.
